The Hidden Crisis in Medical Training

Residency training is intense, but it shouldn’t be toxic.Residency training is meant to challenge you not break you. Yet, studies show that bullying and mistreatment are widespread and damaging across medical training programs.

  • Bullying is Alarmingly Common ; Over 60% of residents report witnessing or experiencing bullying during training (JAMA, 2021). This culture of fear and silence undermines both learning and confidence.

  • Burnout and Errors Rise; Residents who experience bullying are twice as likely to suffer burnout and make medical mistakes impacting both physician wellbeing and patient safety.

  • Careers Cut Short; Toxic training environments drive talented physicians away from medicine, leading to early dropout, low morale, and a loss of skilled caregivers.

Dr. Aleobe Eruemulor

Dr. Aleobe Eruemulor is a board-certified family medicine physician, lifestyle medicine advocate, and the founder of Physician’s Keepers. Her passion for this work is deeply personal. During her medical training, she experienced firsthand the emotional toll of bullying in a toxic environment a season marked by depression, anxiety, and isolation. She knows what it’s like to question your worth, your calling, and your future in medicine. Rather than allow that experience to define her, Dr. Eruemulor transformed her pain into purpose. Today, she uses her voice to advocate for bullied physicians, promote emotional wellness, and foster safe spaces where healing is possible. “I created Physician’s Keepers for every physician who’s ever felt invisible, humiliated, or emotionally broken by a system that was supposed to train and protect them. You are not alone — and you don’t have to heal alone. Together we can eradicate bullying in medicine and create a culture where we teach other Physicians to uplift them and not to break them."
